Do your Genes make your body fat?

Way back in 1953, two scientists named James Watson and Francis Crick proposed a new hypothesis that the genes present in the nucleus of every human cell determined everything about the life and abilities of that human being.

This hypothesis gained much favour, especially among the pharmaceutical manufacturers, as it “taught” that nobody could be personally responsible for anything that happened to them - it was all pre-determined by the genes which they had been “randomly given”. If someone, therefore, became ill, there would be nothing that they themselves could do about it at all. It would only be possible to help them via an outside agency, i.e. pharmaceutical drugs.

So convincing did the hypothesis appear to be that millions were invested over many years in mapping the human genetic structure - “The Human Genome Project”. The hope of the investors was that gene changing drugs could be developed and patented bringing vast profits to the pharmaceutical manufacturers and their friends.

In the 1980’s a new science came into prominence - the science of Epigenetics. Although epigenetics brought Watson and Crick’s hypothesis into question and much of the later development indicated very strongly that the hypothesis could not be true, those who had invested so much money and hope of vast profits into the Human Genome Project continued in their attempt to show that genes do determine much of our lives.

In order for Watson and Crick’s hypothesis to be proven, at the state of knowledge towards the end of the last century, at least 184,000 genes would be necessary. Present day knowledge has upped this to more than 214,000 genes.

In 2003 the results of the Human Genome Project were finally in. The complete mapping of all human genes showed that there are, according to a pamphlet issued by the National Human Genome Research Institute, just 20,500 genes. Not even 10% of the number which would be needed to support Watson & Crick’s hypothesis.

In short, your genes determine nothing whatsoever about you and your life!!!
Genes, according to epigenetic science are merely a passive database which your cells can copy and modify in reaction to changes in your life-style. Your cells can, in fact, create more than one thousand different modified proteins from one single gene!

It is not genes that determine the state of your body and mind but what you do to and with them!
